Sun Decking supply Lvl Joists that are perfect for decking installations.

Choosing the best subframe for your decking is an important aspect of the design and installation.

There are numerous options for your joists.

Steel framing is quite common and often preferred when the environment is particularly damp, and you want to assure yourself that rot is eliminated.  More commonly Aluminium section is used as well.

We stock composite joists, they have limits in strength and are only really suitable for on ground installations, direct to slabs or tiles for example.  We have more information on a separate page- Composite joists.

In our experience timber is still the most commonly used framing material for both bearers and joists.  That includes hardwood species, treated pine and LVL.

We stock LVL as an option for joists for a range of reasons:

  • Consistency.  The LVL joists have an engineered tolerence and less warp/bowing and variance on thickness.  They are much less likely to twist once installed.  As a machined product they are easier to install and set level on longer lengths.  When rated at F17 you can be sure the strength is consistent in each peice and there will be no hidden weakness within the product.
  • Strength.  As a comparsison to a pine, or hardwood the F17 gives a good balance of strength for size.  At 90x45mm joists have a continous span rating at 1900mm with 450mm centers.
  • Comparative Value….  We follow our maxim for the business of Quality and Value.  On balance for the strength and durabity we believe we offer a good balance for a timber option that sits between hardwoods at a higher value, and treated pines that are less costly yet not as strong or consistent.

Frequently asked questions

Decking joists are the subframe that supports the decking, usually constructed in harwood, treated timber, treated LVL, steel box or steel C section, Our decking can be installed on any combination of joists, and each needs some consideration in terms of set out, preparation and fixing options. Given the decking will last at least fifteen years the major planning for joist and subframe is to ensure it lasts just as long. Our joist Shield is effective in ensuring this on timber joist installations.

Sun Decking products are designed and specified to be installed on a maximum of 450mm joist centers in domestic use.    If you are using your decking for heavy traffic it may be worth considering making this less, if you are using in commercial installations it will need to be 350mm.

Replacing a deck is a challenge to assess in cost and time, since you can visually see the timber decking boards are rotting and budget for their replacement accurately, yet it is not so easy to see the state of the joists.  It is one of the unknowns in a deck replacement and damage your budget plans if joists are found to be rotten.  One small sign is if your current screws or nails are lifting, at that point you know at least the local area around the screw is softened.  If you attempt to force or tap a screwdriver into parts of the joist nearby this will help you to understand the extent of the problem.  All is not lost though, even if a joist is damaged in parts then it can be secured with patching or blocking and as long as the joists are level then you can fix the composite decking to these joists, perhaps using longer screws to drive deeper into solid timber.  As you consider this rot, then imagine if the original installer had used a Joist Shield?  The joists would be in perfect condition still.

Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is a manufactured high-strength timber product designed as a replacement for many frequently utilised timber types in construction. Its high strength structural capabilities and resistance to bending and cracking, make LVLs ideal for everything from structural applications like headers, beams, rim boards and edge-forming to flooring joists making for nice quiet floors.

The laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is constructed of numerous layers of thin timber that are adhered together. It is through this manufacturing process, that LVL has a number of benefits over traditional milled timber. It’s stronger, straighter and more consistent since it’s made in a factory following strict standards. It is far less prone than traditional timber to warping, twisting, bending or shrinkage due to its composite nature creating a product with far greater permissible stress levels.

A timber deck may have a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years, and from experience can be much less if left untreated. If the timber used was low quality, it may be as little as four or five years before the deck is failing. Timber is not generally warranted in any significant way, since the quality is variable and there are many factors that can create early failure.  Sun Decking composite decking is warranted at 15 years and not dependent upon treatment and is expected to last much longer.
