Resort Style Backyard Pool Deck

ELITE Harbour & Slate Grey

Product: ELITE Slate Grey
Project: Backyard Pool Deck
Completion date: February 2023

A resort style backyard pool deck was created using Sun Decking’s ELITE Slate Grey composite decking.

Background:

The customer had purchased a house with a pool, but the pool was not easily accessible from the patio. They wanted to create a deck around the pool and connect it with the patio to make the pool more accessible and create a resort-style feeling to their garden and pool area.

Solution:

The customer chose to use ELITE Slate Grey composite decking from Sun Decking. They selected Sun Decking because it was the only company with the boards in the finish and colour they liked. The biggest challenge was creating various levels because their garden around the pool had a slope. The solution was to use pedestals to create different levels and steps.

Testimonial:

“The experience with Sun Decking was great. Neil was fantastic to work with. Although we had been planning on building a deck for one year, once we made the decision we wanted the boards delivered in 2 days and this was no problem for Neil and his team. When we needed a few more boards after we finished our project, to create something else, I could pick these up from the yard and Neil was so kind to cut them in smaller sizes (to size for our project), so I could transport them myself.” Homeowner

Conclusion:

Sun Decking provided the perfect solution for the customer’s needs with the ELITE Slate Grey composite decking, creating a beautiful backyard oasis that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Maintaining and Cleaning Composite Decking – enjoy your deck at its best

Cleaning composite decking

Cleaning Composite Decking – some guidance and tips

Maintaining and cleaning Composite decking is important even though it is often promoted as ‘maintenance free decking’.  In many ways it is very much a product that requires very little maintenance, it will for example not require staining, and there is no possibility that it will rot and soften out from years of damp or termites as timber would.  That is why it is becoming a popular choice for decking and one of the reasons Sun Decking are enthused to provide high quality, great value composite decking.

Composite decking does however need to be looked after on a regular basis, much as any flooring product requires basic cleaning.  Day to day life also presents cleaning challenges and so we know it will be useful to provide some support and guidance so you are able to keep your composite deck to the standard you desire.

While maintenance is significantly lower than natural timber, there are a few steps you can take to ensure your composite decking looks and feels great, and we’ve surmised the most important considerations here.

composite decking

Classic composite decking

Start off with a clean deck

When your deck is initially installed with the new boards then there is usually quite a lot of residual manufacturing dust/dirts on the composite decking product.  This is from the sanding and processing of the board in manufacturing.  If you are installing the boards then you will notice it, if not then it may not be obvious.  Either way it is very sensible to give the decking a really good gurney once installed in order to clear off all the dust remnants and bring out the best in the colours.

Avoid standing water

Composite decking is manufactured to resist water ingress and the rot that comes with it.  In 28 day submersion tests a good composite would only take in 2 or 3% of its weight in water.  Whilst this is reassuring the composite decking design must avoid standing water around the deck to avoid damage from longer term, years, of immersion.

This is one of the reasons warranties exclude decking placed on the ground, without sufficient gaps and air circulation to allow boards to remain predominantly dry. So take the time in the installation to make sure there is ventilation around your decking.

In the design then do ensure that the gutter downspouts are not outpouring onto the deck, good design will avoid this unnecessary water and dirt accumulating on the deck.

Keep mould at bay

Another consequence of water remaining on the decking boards for a long period is the likelihood of mould appearing.

Mould resistance is high on composite decking and it will however appear on any product in the right conditions. Standing water with warm conditions allows this to happen more easily.  It is often the case that mould also grows initially on the dirt left on a surface as opposed to the actual material of the surface.

A well ventilated deck that is cleaned regularly will be at minimal risk of moulds.

Cleaning

Cleaning composite decking is pretty easy with most regular floor cleaners, most are alkaline based, and it is better to simply not use a bleach based product as there is no benefit to the cleaning process.

The Elite™ product has a virgin plastic laminate around the composite.  This does make it more resilient to harsh cleaning products and solvents, and it is quite happy to have turps used to clean off paint for example.  It also for example resilient to mosquito creams/sprays and suncreams will not effect it.  If you have any really bad problems with stains and want to use some unusual solvent then just put the product on an offcut for an hour to check, it will almost certainly be okay.

Classic™ composite boards are a different product for cleaning. The surface is a true WPC composite in that it is 55% timber product bonded with plastics.  Be sure not to use any bleach products and just use a mild floor cleaner when you are cleaning composite decking, most are slightly alkaline in any case.  The classic™ will take up stains more easily than the Elite™ composite boards and generally it is sufficient to soak stains with a mild cleaner and then scrub/gurney the area.  This board does not like bleach products, the timber element of the product is organic and susceptible to becoming lighter with bleach.

Cleaning of both decking products with an alkaline solution such as Borax is helpful in place of bleach and is easy to find in Woolworths or similar stores.  If you want to prevent or kill any mould spores this is probably the first go to option.  It is also a disinfectant and will help neutralise food spills that may have made their way into the decking gaps.  It also will keep the ants at bay on your deck.

Sealers

Composite decking is designed to not require sealers.  They will continue to look good and be durable with just some general cleaning as discussed.  The Elite™ composite boards are simply going to be unable to take any sort of stain, it will just fall off and ruin the boards.  The Classic™ decking boards have the ability to take some sealing and staining products should you wish to change the colouring at a later stage or perhaps ‘refresh’ the deck to create a different look.  If you are considering this just give us a call to discuss.

Are you looking to transform your outdoor space?

Adding a deck or patio is an exciting home improvement upgrade that’s worth doing right.

While timber looks great, the increased upfront cost for premium timber and high maintenance year after year can be a turn off. For the same visual ‘WOW’ factor (without the cost) try composite decking to help you save time and money.

8 benefits of composite decking – creating a more comfortable outdoor lifestyle

composite decking

We are asked daily about the various characteristics of composite decks, how they compare to wood and what to expect in terms of durability and practicality.

Here we clarify the main benefits and we hope by doing so it helps you to make the best decision for your situation and needs.  If you have any questions free to contact us on 0444 545 156, we always are happy to talk decking and our knowledge about different products available and the various options for installation is always free.

These are the main reasons for choosing composite over timber.  Installed well then your commitment in the years ahead is limited to keeping the deck clean.

#1 Low maintenance

This is probably the most pressing inquiry that I discuss on a day to day basis ‘Is composite maintenance free?’  A good quality composite deck installed with some care will never require the ongoing maintenance typically associated with a timber outdoor deck.  You’ll never need to oil, paint or stain a composite deck to stop it from rotting or splitting and is completely termite proof.

Unlike timber, our composite decking does not bend, twist, swell or splinter as a result of weathering so there will be no requirement to re fix twisted or warped boards.  The rebated profile of composite boards is designed for installation without direct fixings so will never need to be ‘re-nailed’ or re-sanded at any point in the future.

#2 Durability

The durability of composite wood decking allows for use in a wider range of more demanding environments. In Australia our sun exposed outdoor spaces require products that can withstand the heat and UV for decades.  The typical challenges of poolside decking and salt-water environments fade away as water does not impregnate composite products, it is twice as dense as hardwood and so tough it is used for marine pontoons.

A capped composite has an extra protective layer laminated on the surface and is very resistant to scratching.   We always recommend that you take some care and install feet protection on chairs and tables, particularly if you have metal furniture.  One of the best source of furniture protection we have found is at Flexliner engineering who provide a wide range of furniture protection to purchase online.

#3 Aesthetics

Most composite decking has a beautiful timber effect finish that is either embossed or sanded onto the boards.  The colours range from rich dark or light timber tones through to various greys and our popular pure white. For bespoke projects it can also be custom made in strong colours such as orange, blue or lime green! Getting creative is easy with options to have separate border colours or picture frames to segregate zones and even intricate insignias. The special hidden fixings allow unlimited options for design layout.  And the best thing, it will look similar in ten years as it does when first laid.

#4 Long lasting

“How long will my composite deck last.’  A great reassurance is that composite is a manufactured product with consistent quality so there are no natural flaws or weaknesses that can be inherent in natural timbers.  This is one of the reasons composite products can be warranted for a longer period through quality manufacturing.  Our boards are warranted for 15 years, and will last longer without any ongoing maintenance.

We are often and rightly challenged with the fact a timber deck can also last 10 or maybe 15 years.  This is correct and they can if you or somebody you pay maintains it to a high standard continually and you invest at least once a year in the not insubstantial cost of stains and sealers.  Composite simply provides you with economy of effort and money over its lifetime compared to timber.

#5 Cost Efficient

The initial cost for quality solid composite decking can be slightly higher upfront than timber.  It is the longevity of the product along with its lack of ongoing maintenance which substantially lowers the ‘whole of life’ cost of your deck compared to timber which requires maintenance.  Plus you can avoid the personal time cost and inconvenience of regular maintenance in the years ahead.  Our composite decking prices are the best in the market for high quality decking boards making them more affordable.

#6 Safety

Once installed there will never be a situation where you are catching your bare feet on raised fixings with a composite deck, nor dealing with splinters from rotting or raised butt joins. We developed our Elite range of decking boards with a finish that is highly slip resistant at P5, which is the highest Australian commercial standard for a wet slip test.  Our Classic range of boards are tested at P3 and whilst not commercial level they are more than secure for general domestic use in the wet.

#7 Environmentally sustainable

Composite decking is a combination of recycled plastic and recycled timber.   Every single 5.4m board we sell contains approximately 7.5kg of plastic from bottles which avoided landfill or a life damaging the marine ecosystem plus 11.5kg of recycled timber reducing the demand to cut down forest for timber decking.  This is personally one of the pivotal reasons we started our business as we were looking for sustainable products for our house build.   At the end of it’s life at 15+ years composite is also recyclable! In fact Sun Decking are taking steps now to create a viable route to recycle the materials within composite decking for a third life cycle.

#8 Easy to install

Composite boards have a consistent quality and tolerances that are very accurate. These characteristics save a lot of time on the install, minimising potential problems and allowing for less waste.  The hidden clip system also means that it is much faster for a qualified installer to complete a deck.  It is also a fairly easy process for a less familiar DIY installer to make an excellent job of their composite decking installation.  We personally support many DIY projects and professional tradies to ensure the deck is laid well and gives years of hassle free pleasure.

We have installation information on our website under our Resources menu.  Please get in touch if you need any extra advice, perhaps on the right fixing clip for a tricky design idea?
